CYCLIST ÁLVARO FERNANDO RIZO ROMERO DIED AFTER BEING HIT BY A TRUCK ON TUESDAY MORNING, THE DAY HE WOULD HAVE CELEBRATED HIS 28TH BIRTHDAY
The incident occurred 25 yards south of the Centennial Monument, on kilometer 148 of the Pan-North American Highway, in the José Santos Zelaya neighborhood of Estelí.
Rizo Romero, from the town of Rosita in the Mining Triangle of the Northern Caribbean, was struck by a truck with license plate number NS 12035 carrying 16,000 cubic feet of wood.
The truck was driven by Rosman Francisco Ortez Suárez, 45, who, due to several other vehicles on the road, was not seen by the cyclist as he entered the busy highway.
According to the truck driver, he was traveling north-south at moderate speed and did not see the cyclist. When he felt the impact, he braked, but it was too late.
